Asheville, NC - Asheville residents are invited to unite in the We Are Not Bashful march against violence and intolerance to be held at 6 pm on May 12.

This peaceful, permitted demonstration is in response to recent alleged hate crimes against LGBTQ residents. The demonstration will promote harmony and tolerance, said organizer Samantha Soper.

"Violence of any sort is unacceptable, regardless of who you are," Soper said.

The alleged crimes took place in neighborhoods in and around downtown. Five victims claim abuse and are afraid to report the crimes. Victims were verbally and physically abused. The assailants beat at least one victim with a metal pipe and shouted anti-gay slurs.

Concerned community members have come together to encourage all of Asheville to stand up against violence. They invite likeminded people to meet on Wednesday, May 12th, at Tod’s Tasties on Montford Avenue at 6:00 PM. A route from Tod’s to the Vance Monument has been prepared in cooperation with the Asheville Police Department."

Editor's Note: If anyone who has been a victim of anti-LGBTQ violence or harassment would like to come forward and tell their story, Stereotypd is interested in hearing from them and keeping their identity anonymous. The more the Asheville community, queer and straight, knows about these kinds of incidents and attacks and the affect they have not just on the victim but on all of us, the easier and sooner we can end this kind of intolerence and bullying.
