federal ban on funding for needle exchange programs has been lifted. The House passed a $730.5 billion bill to fund health, education and labor programs in fiscal year 2010 after barely defeating an attempt to pull language that would lift the ban on funding for federal needle exchange programs.

“This is the first time in over 20 years that we are on the verge of recognition by the federal government of the proven cost-effectiveness and impact of syringe exchange as a very important tool for prevention of HIV infection and viral hepatitis,” said Ronald Johnson, Deputy Executive Director of the D.C. based advocacy group AIDS Action. “Allowing the local community to use federal funds is very critical to stopping these epidemics.”

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) told the Bay Area Reporter he intends to introduce legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. Which is great. But is he forgetting something?

The efforts to repeal the federal ban against same-sex marriage will not extend rights to LGBTQ couples in domestic partnerships or civil unions. Why? Because it's too complicated.

Presidential Medal of FreedomPresident Barack Obama is awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 people, including Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, tennis great Billie Jean King, Stephen Hawking, and  posthumous awards for Harvey Milk and former Rep. Jack Kemp.

“We are thrilled President Obama is honoring Harvey Milk with the Medal of Freedom. He’s an American hero and trailblazer whose election more than 30 years ago triggered a political awakening that inspires us still today. This recognition sends an important message about how critical political leadership will be in making all Americans equal in the eyes of the law,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund.

Harvey Millk to be Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom PDF Print E-mail

presidential medal of freedomWhen the White House released the list of this year's recipients of the Presidential Medal of FreedomHarvey Milk with register to vote sign, two icons of the LGBTQ community were among the 16 honorees.

Slain gay rights actvist and first openly gay elected offical Harvey Milk along with openly lesbian tennis legend and author Billie Jean King are two of the first recipients to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from awarded by President Barack Obama.  The medals, America's highest honor for a civilian, will be presented in a ceremony at the White House on August 12.

Stuart Milk will be accept the posthumous award for his late uncle, Harvey Milk.

"... my uncle would be so proud of this high honor," said Stuart Milk. "His election was, for him, a beginning - a chance to make real change. That change is happening, but we still have so far to go. I hope this recognition inspires LGBT Americans everywhere to heed Harvey's call to run for office, to serve openly, to live proudly with authenticity and to demand the equality that we all deserve."
