In New York City, one classically-trained bassoonist has come up with a creative and fun way to while away his summer: being the gay humor man serving up good ice cream.
Doug Quint is making a little extra cash during the season when most orchestras are on break and having fun serving up smiles, too. He and his boyfriend Bryan Petroff are operating a soft-serve ice cream truck in the Union Square and East Village areas of New York City. This isn't a run-of-the-mill ice cream truck but rather a gay one. More precisely, it's the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. |

Yesterday the American Psychological Association declared that mental health professionals should not tell LGBTQ patients that therapy or other treatments can change their sexual orientation.
Reparative therapy, a technique used by only a small group of therapists to change homosexuals into heterosexuals, mostly associated with religious fundamentalists, has been criticized before but this is the strongest repudiation of the practice by the governing council of the APA.
With a 125-4 vote, the APA's governing council adopted a resolution stating that no solid evidence exists that changing one's sexual orientation is likely and that research suggests that the efforts to do so are harmful and can induce depression and suicidal tendencies.

One of Oregon's senators made history today by introducing that first ever trans-inclusive bill, a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to be considered by the upper chamber of Congress.
Jeff Merkley (D), serving his first term in the Senate, was the major supporter of a similar non-discrimination bill in Oregon when he served in that state's state House. He also backed legislation enacting domestic partnerships in Oregon.
Merkley explained his interest in such legislation to the Washington Blade saying, "For me, on of the huge issues that I've cared a lot about is equality under the law and fairness to all Americans, and this was just a core part of the way I view the world."
As of this afternoon, Senator Merkley's bill had 37 co-sponsors including Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Susan Collins (R-ME), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Chris Dodd (D-CT).
