This Week in Your Gayborhoods - February 12 through 17 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lin Orndorf

It’s been a busy and exciting week in Asheville. Asheville City Council voted 4 to 3 to develop a plan that may (cross your fingers) eventually provide LGBTQ employees of the city with Domestic Partner Benefits. Finally, one of the “gayest” cities in the Southeast is not only acknowledging that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender folks live here, they may actually ensure that employees with same-sex partners are compensated the same as married straight folks who work for the city.

It’s not a done-deal yet. Stereotypd will keep you posted. In the meantime, we’d like to give a big shout-out to Councilman Gordon Smith who brought the issue to the Council and a big thanks to the other members of City Council who supported the measure thus far: Cecil Bothwell, Esther Manheim and Brownie Newman.

What’s been going on in your gayborhood? If you have some news and/or something noteworthy where you live in North Carolina or South Carolina that may be of interest or have an impact on the LGBTQ community, please let us know. Just send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras weekend. Please be careful in the snow (if you have it in your area) as you head out to your favorite gay bar.

Here are the fun happenings in the Carolinas this week and beyond...

Mark Your Calendars with These Special Events…

Now through February 13

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The Workshop Theatre located at 1136 Bull Street in Columbia, SC presents The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The foot-stomping musical is a funny look at sex and politics in the Lone Star state — but all of it based on a true story! The tale follows the history of a brothel in Gilbert, Texas, from 1844 until the early 1970s. Our show picks up in the middle of a political and media furor that threatens the livelihood of these ladies of the evening and the men who love them. Mixing in a classy madam with a heart of gold, a hot-headed sheriff, an evangelical television investigative reporter (not to mention a championship football team and a house full of beautiful women!) — Best Little Whorehouse guarantees fun for all! For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.workshoptheatre.com or call the box office, 803-799-6551.

Freak Pageant
. Compete in the first ever Freaks of Asheville Pageant for a spot in the 2011 Freaks of Asheville Calendar. The Freaks Pageant is much like a standard beauty pageant, but without the beauty, swimsuits, and tiaras. You'll perform your fabulous offbeat talents, show your best get up and go costume gear, and of course give the all-important interview. And, much like standard beauty pageants, you can bribe the judges (we suggest chocolate and feather boas!). The Freaks of Asheville pageant will take place at Grove House (11 Grove Street) on Saturday, February 13th from 8-10 pm. Contestants will perform a 3 minute talent segment, show a costume of their own creation runway style, and respond to 3 minutes worth of interview questions relevant to the kingdom of freaky behavior and thought. Contestants will compete for a single appearance in the 2011 Freaks of Asheville Calendar. Appearances in the calendar by pageant winners are limited to the top winners (number to be determined). First, second and third place winners will also receive a trophy and gifts. This pageant will be part of a huge all night bash happening on 3 floors of Grove House. The Freaks of Asheville Pageant is produced by Kitty Love, Craggie Brewing Company, and the Freaks of Asheville. The Freaks of Asheville calendar is a fundraiser for Arts 2 People, who receives 10% of calendar income and a big ol' check from the pageant party. . Marc Adams is the featured guest speaker at the PFLAG Salisbury/Rowan meeting on Saturday, February 13 from 10am to Noon at the Haven Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 207 West Harrison Street in Salisbury, NC. Growing up the son of a fundamentalist Baptist minister is tough enough. Growing up gay in an environment where your parents, teachers and peers deem evangelical Christians like Jerry Falwell as left wing liberals is an entirely different experience.Marc Adams grew up in such a home. In an effort to save his own life, he decided at age 16 to rebel against his parents and attend Liberty University where he thought he could find a way to change his behavior to heterosexual. His experience there changed his life and jump started his journey to self acceptance and personal freedom. Marc Adams is the author of nine books. His newest book is titled, "It's Not About You: Understanding Coming Out & Self Acceptance." He is a respected authority on fundamentalism, the religious right, gay civil rights as well as his ground breaking work with his own nonprofit, HeartStrong. HeartStrong is a social justice organization providing hope and help to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students who are persecuted in religious educational institutions. Marc Adams’ presentation covers an often dark side of life. He bridges the serious discussion with humor and all-encompassing human compassion.
